A few others may also remember a series called "Voltron" that took place in space where a group of futuristic vehicles combined to form Voltron. In Japan-- where all the "Voltrons" originate (although none of the robots are named Voltron or have other ties to one another)-- that version was from an anime series called "Armored Fleet Dairugger XV", but we knew him better as "Voltron I". But what about Volton II? Where was he?
Actually, Voltron II never truly existed in a carton series. The character you see here-- Albegas-- had his own anime series in Japan in the 80's. The producers of the US Voltron cartoon series were going to integrate Albegas into the US Voltron series (I assume with some editing of the two cartoons) and call him "Voltron II". But the popularity of the original Voltron (or, GoLion, his true Japanese name) was so high that they decided not to mess with things and the idea of turning Albegas into "Voltron II" was scrapped.
However, Albegas did make an appearance stateside as "Volton II" (or "Gladiator Voltron) in the form of an awesome diecast robot imported by Matchbox-- who also distributed the other "Voltrons" as well as many other import robots from Japan.
What we have here, however, is a representation of Albegas in his true, original form and name as produced by the recently prolific Evolution Toy as part of their Dynamite Action series. As recent newcomers to the robot market, this Dynamite Action line continues to be a major contender against the more established companies like Bandai. I'm definitely excited to see what they'll do next!
